Early Career

At the insistence and urging of his girlfriend, Craig moved to New York in 1980 to improve his career. He thought that New York offered him more opportunities in show business. In the long run, this turned out to be a good move, but in the short term, it was a difficult adventure. Shortly after his arrival in New York he lost his job and had to wander homeless and sell newspapers to survive. During this period he said he had to sleep under the marble stairs in Grand Central Station.

Months later, the situation eased a bit when he found an agent who believed in his abilities and helped him find small acting jobs in commercials.

Craig Sheffer first came to national consciousness when he played the role of Ian Hayden in the ABC daytime series One Life to Live, and he followed up with an impressive performance in the 1983 primetime series The Hamptons.

His first foray into film was in 1985 as the best friend of troubled teenager Emilio Estevez in That Was Then. This Is Now. In Fire with Fire, he also played the lead role of a reform camp inmate, and in 1985 he played an antagonistic rich boy in Some Kind of Wonderful. Jobs kept pouring in, but his life took a turn when he was diagnosed with cancer in 1990. During this time, Craig took time off from his work commitments and traveled to India and parts of Europe. Since then, he has kept his fight against cancer very quiet. In fact, he has given little or no follow-up information. This has led to many people doubting whether he really had cancer. Most cancer survivors are vocal and open about their fight to overcome the disease, but Sheffer has said absolutely nothing.

One of his most popular works is the portrayal of Keith Scott in the CW Network series One Tree Hill. Sheffer was a regular for three seasons, but his character was killed in the middle of season three, but he had several guest appearances in season four. His most recent appearance is alongside Steven Seagal in the Code of Honor.

One of the lesser-known facts about him is that he was a film director in the dark comedy American Crude.
