He attended a Shakespeare workshop in 1979. Ian McKellen taught at the workshops and David was absorbed in the classes. Later, he won two first prizes at the Shakespeare Festival in Southern California.

David was not able to take Broadway easily because he was picky about the whole thing. Either he was not satisfied with the cast, either with the director or with the play itself.

For his debut as a director, once again, critics were ambivalent in their criticism. The most disappointing thing is how Schwimmer, who spent 10 seasons in a sitcom full of hyperverbal characters, managed to ruin the tender moments of “Fatboy”; on the other hand, he was named best first director for a British independent film award.

For his debut off-Broadway, he was appreciated for guiding his team for his intensity and comic timing, although he was criticized by the Los Angeles Times for not trying something more difficult.

He was appreciated by the Chicago Tribune for his character George Gibbs in Our Town by saying, “Schwimmer… turns into a poignant, richly textured and obviously sincere performance like George Gibbs. I have seen a lot of Schwimmer’s post-Friends stage work in London and New York, and I have never seen it better.

He is involved in charity and awareness-raising support against child abuse and is an active director of the Rape Treatment Centre in Santa Monica which helps rape victims through acquaintances and child rapes.
