Without sufficient means, the king’s mother had many difficulties raising the children, as her small family depended most of the time on relatives who provided money and shelter. It is said that when King was younger, he once went to play with a friend where he witnessed his friend die in a train accident, although King has no memory of the accident, critics speculate that this may have influenced his love of horror. The “Horror King” discovered his passion for the genre after reading The Lurker in the Shadows, a paperback version of H. P. Lovecraft’s collection of short stories. The book had belonged to his father before he left the family.

How Did Stephen King Become A Renowned Writer?

King began writing for fun while still in school, publishing articles in his brother’s newspaper, Dave’s Rag. He often traveled long distances with his brother to watch horror movies in the theaters. He then rewrote the plot of such films and sold them to his classmates and friends. His teachers made him pay back the profits when he was discovered. As a teenager, King published his first series of stories in two different fanzines, and he won a Scholastic Art and Writing Award.

Although King became a certified teacher after graduating from college, he did not get a job until 1971, when he was hired as a teacher at Hampden Academy in Maine. Over the years, he looked for a job and earned little money selling short stories to magazines, a trend he continued after taking up work. He made plans to write a novel.

Soon he began typing his first published novel Carrie on his wife’s portable typewriter. Carrie’s writing began quite dramatically as a short story intended for a magazine. King reportedly threw the first few pages of the manuscript in the trashcan, and his wife fished them out and convinced him to complete the story. Carrie turned out to be a best-selling horror novel.

The success of the critically acclaimed Carrie put King in the spotlight of the literary world and spurred him on. King published further books: Salem’s Lot (1975), The Shining (1977), The Stand (1978), Different Seasons (1982). Es (1986) and The Dark Tower (series).

Under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, King published the books Rage, The Long Walk, Roadwork, The Running Man, and Thinner. The pseudonym Richard Bachman died of cancer after a bookseller discovered the relationship between the name and King’s works. After Bachman’s death, he wrote further books, including The Dark Half, Despair, The Plant, Dreamcatcher, Cell, Duma Key, Shortly After Sunset, November 22, 1963, Joyland, Revival.
