Although many people think that Don Rickles’ comedy was not funny, many more would agree that the man is one of the lords of the rib breakers. Those who don’t like his comedy have probably been roasted in one of his numbers since Don is a specialist in insult comedy. While he pelts his audience with insulting insults, he produced a big laugh.

The comedian has made some music recordings and is rarely described as an author. According to records, his comedy album Hello, Dummy! from 1968 and his follow-up album Don Rickles Speaks! from 1969 were quite successful. The comedian improved his professional position and earned the status of an author when he published his first book in 2007 and another one the following year.

For his efforts, Don has been honored on several occasions with prestigious awards. For example, he won the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000. Eight years later, his 2007 documentary film Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project won him the Primetime Emmy Award. That’s not all; Don won the Legend Award in 2009 and also received the Johnny Carson Award in 2012, which is supposed to recognize comic excellence. For those who do not know, Don Rickles is no more, he died on April 6, 2017, at the age of 90 years in his home in Beverly Hills in Los Angeles, California. His publicist Paul Shefrin, who brought the news of his departure to the world, revealed that the cause of his death was kidney failure.

Before the comedian died, he worked on a series of Dinner With Don, in which he was to interview celebrities in top restaurants in Los Angeles.

Although Rickles spent the last days of his life in California, he was born as Donald Jay Rickles on May 8, 1926, in Queens, New York City, and grew up in the northwest neighborhood of the city. The legendary comedian, who is often described as a master of comic insult, believes that God created mankind and brought them to earth to make them laugh. He would agree that he has the gift of saying things with a certain attitude; things that everyone else is afraid to say.

Apparently his mother noticed this and nurtured it. Notwithstanding the fact that Don’s father was not so keen on humor, believing that the line between amusement and stupidity is very fine, she would encourage Don to mock his uncles and make them laugh at family gatherings.

It is known that the comedian was a student at Newtown High School. After graduating, he joined the US Navy and served in the Philippines during World War II. During this time, Don planned how he would fulfill his dream of becoming an actor. When he was finally discharged, he went to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Despite the knowledge he had gained at this institution, Don found it difficult to get a job as an actor. That drove him back to comedy, and he started doing stand-ups here and there. As was to be expected, he was put under a lot of pressure. But he soon became adept at heckling by responding with comic insults. His audience liked it, and that was the beginning of a very successful career in the insult comedy.

Don came from a Jewish family. Records say that the comedian’s origin was traced back to Lithuanian and Austrian. His father, Max Rickles, who worked as an insurance agent, came with his parents from Kaunas to the United States in 1903. At his death, Don Rickles left his family, which included his wife Barbara Sklar, his daughter Mindy Mann and his grandchildren, Ethan and Harrison Mann. Rickles and Barbara married in 1965 after they met through Don’s agents and became lovers.

Besides Mindy, they had a son, Larry Rickles. He was a producer and television comedy writer until he died in December 2011. Larry was only 41 years old when he died.
