Joe Lacob – Biography

He was born in New Bedford Massachusetts on January 10, 1956, the son of his parents, his father Sidney, and his mother Marlene. He grew up in a bourgeois Jewish family where he was instilled with the values of Jewish tradition. As an adolescent, Lacob was an ardent lover of basketball and was a supporter of the Boston Celtics, his favorite team, the NBA. Joe and his whole family moved to Anaheim, California soon after, and he supported the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

After settling in California, he continued his education in the big city. After high school, he attended the University of California Irvine, where he earned a degree in life sciences. He then went to the University of California Los Angeles (ULCA), where he earned a master’s degree in public health. Lacob is also a graduate of the Standford Graduate School of Business.

At the Business School, his hidden passion for business and entrepreneurship began to be reflected. He began his career at Cetus Corporation, a biotechnology company, where he held a senior management position. He then worked as a senior executive for other companies such as Booz, Allen & Hamilton, and FHP International, a healthcare organization.

In 1987, Lacob became a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPBC), where he gradually learned the investment business. The business icon still works with the company and has managed the company’s investments in over 50 life science companies. He joined Corixa in 1994 as a director and also served as a director at TherOx, Inc. Lacob has also served on the advisory boards of companies such as Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc. and Celladon Corporation.

Despite his apparent connection to health care companies, Joe’s undying love of basketball has always been at the forefront. Early in his sporting career, he was an investor in the American Basketball League, which was abandoned after the formation of the rival Women’s National Basketball Association WNBA. He was a partner in the Celtics before he and a group of investors bought the Golden State Warriors in July 2010.

The Warriors were acquired for a whopping $450 million by Chris Cohan. The acquisition of the team by Lacob ended the dry spell in the NBA championships that had lasted since 1975, as the Warriors won two championships in seven seasons. The Warriors swim with a value of over 2 billion dollars.
