As a result, he sold over 100 million records worldwide, having one or more songs for everyone and everyone, which made him one of the best-selling music artists of all time, winning 8 Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, 6 American Music Awards and an Academy Award for the 1984 film Purple Rain.
Prince – Wiki, Sister
Prince was born in Minneapolis on June 7, 1958, the son of Mattie Della and John Lewis Nelson, who are of African-American descent. His family was one in which music had a celebrated place in their daily lives. His father was a songwriter who also played the piano, while his mother was no exception as a jazz singer. His father called him Prince because he wanted him to do everything he couldn’t do. He achieved more and must have done everything his father couldn’t do during his lifetime, maybe in music.
Prince has a younger sister named Tyka, who was born on May 18, 1960. Just like her brother, Tyka was interested in music because she enjoyed the support of her music-loving parents. This encouragement and playful support from his sister and his parents were perhaps the essential ingredients that propagated his first song when he was very young, playing on his father’s piano when he was 7 years old. The song was called Funk Machine.
He attended Minneapolis Bryant Junior High and then Central High School where, like all Americans, he was active in football, baseball and, of course, basketball. He was good because he got steady playing time on the basketball team at Central’s junior university. As an adult, he continued to play the game in his free time.
The love between Mattie Della and John Lewis Nelson soon waned when they divorced. His mother remarried, and Prince eventually stayed with his stepfather Hayward Baker. Prince did not get along with him very well, however, as he often moved house with his mother (stepfather), his biological father and his neighbors, the Anderson family, with whom he became friends with their son Andre.
Beginning of his Music Career
A relative of his, Pepe Willie, founded a band in 1975, which was named “94 East”. Prince played guitar in the band and wrote the song Just Another Sucker together with Pepe Willie. They recorded several songs, which later formed the album Minneapolis Genius – The Historic 1977 Recordings.
He signed his first management contract at the age of 17 with Owen Husney, a Minneapolis businessman who helped him create a demo at Sound 80 Studios in Minneapolis under the tutelage of producer/engineer David Z. This demo recording went public and led to several record companies, including Warner Bros. Records, A&M Records and Columbian Records showing interest in the young man.
With Husney’s help and approval, he signed for Warner Bros. Records, giving him creative control over 3 albums and ownership of the publishing rights. This was a good deal and the beginning of bigger things to come. His first album called For You was recorded at Record Plant Studios in Sausalito, California. He continued to make music with Warner Bros. continued to make music over the years, although he left at one time but returned in later years.
Prince stood as long as he lived at a height of 5 feet 2.22 inches or 158 cm. He was quite below the average height of most American men and was thought to be 5 feet 2 inches tall. But according to the autopsy report, he was an inch taller after his death.
Prince’s Wife, Gay Vibes, Son, Family
Prince has been associated with many beauties like Anna Fantastic, Madonna and a handful of others. He got engaged to Susan Melvoin in 1985, but they never made it to the altar. On 14 February 1996, he married his background singer and dancer Mayte Garcia. They had an age difference of 15 years. Their marriage produced a son named Amiir Nelson, who was born on 16 October 1996. Unfortunately, he died a week later, on October 23rd, due to the consequences of the Pfeiffer Syndrome as the cause of death.
The loss of Amiir and Garcia’s miscarriage took a toll on the marriage, as they were divorced in 2000. Prince quietly remarried with Manuela Testolini in 2001 but was divorced again in May 2006 after he had already separated in 2003. He may have remained unmarried until his death.
Cause of Death, Net worth
Weeks before his death, Prince was said to have had influenza and dehydration but didn’t take proper medication as he felt he was alright. This was against medical advice though.
On April 21, 2016, a call was made from his home seeking medical help for someone unconscious. Emergency responders rushed down to Prince’s home and found him in an elevator unconscious. CPR was performed but he didn’t come back. A paramedic later said he had been dead for 6 hours before they came. There were no signs of suicide, foul play or any of such things. A press release from Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office in Anoka County on June 2, 2016, later announced that the cause of his death was the overdose of an opioid.
Prince has an estimated net worth of 300 million dollars.
